The name 'Bollywood' originated from Bombay & Hollywood. Bollywood expresses through a range of mixed styles.
BollyWood first was discovered when performing in Indian films, callled 'Filmi'. These were mainly Hindee films.
There was a well known story to Bollywood, expecially in the film, this was originated like the structure of Romeo & Juilliet. A well known Hindu film called Liala Maju, was a well known Hindu Filmi that was created in the 1976. This was a legendary story based on 2 individuals called Layla and Majnun. the story was an asian version of Romeo and Juilliet, but showed much more proffesion and creativity due to the range that they had of styles, characters and story line.
This is the front cover of the Filmi. You can tell the expressions already from just the front cover, the expressions on the faces, shows alot of emotions aswell as the creativity of gestures from both of them.
Khatak is a style of Bollywood that is obtained by the feet. individuals suggested this was developed from Flamenko, due to the dynamics being the same structure. In this style of dance there is a range of props that are jewellery; bracelets and bangles/ bells on the feet. This style was originated from the North.
ODISSI, came from the South, the style of this was statue based, from the temples/ mosque. the body would be shaped in a statue technique .
Mahabaratchya is a style that emphasis alot of western styles like' Jazz, this is therefore how other nationalitys have a positive outcome / advantage from this due to their techique of styles having a much wider range. Statistics show that there are more english, that will dance in the format of Bollywood than there are asain performers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDyTkEXOLl4 Desi girls - there are a range of different girls called this, however my friend whom is full english is a Desi girl, she has her own Desi girl crew and all of them are english, no body is asian, thios represents the advertisement of how easy it is to interpret nd perform a dance that is not your nationality background, but also the acceptence of Asian / hindu's letting and welcoming performers into their background.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBtIaGBeDp0 as you can see in this video, there are different styles of dance interpreted into this performance, like belly dancing, all in the belly and hips moving, this is a big gesture throughout Bollywood, the hips and posture of body.
Here you have the Arm gestures, combined with the fingers, when seeing this you altermately know that this represents Bollywood dancing.
Today Rosario taught us different postures, that respresent Bollywood, I found getting into the postures hard to get into due to so many things you need to think about, like;
- Posture
- bent knees
- fingers
- arm placement
- hips
- facial expressions
These statues are based from figures / statues in the temples. Therefore are developed throughout the dance piece in different styles.
Personal Opinion:
I love Bollywood, I previously performed and learnt this in my old college, during my time here I related to alot of asain people and become good friends with alott, I went to alot of Asian weddings were I would see these dances being perfomed as a normal dance to them, getting on the dance floor beforming bollywood but it would be there normal dance, see I would be perfoming Hip-Hop. I find that with Bollywood there is so much characterisation and the atmosphere is fenominal. Everyone is happy and in a celebrating mood with bursting energy.
Strengths :
- learnt the basics of Bollywood before so knew alot of the techniques already.
- Listen to Punjabi music due to the atmosphere it gives out, speak simple words in punjabi
- Kept up with the dynamics thjat rosario taught and therefore have good stamina, but can still be imporved
- The whole class interpreted and wanted to learn as well as myself
- Got the technique of how to perform each finger placement
- I need to work on the different postures there are due to this it was interupting with my other dance performance, it is all in the hips but making sure that every time I bend my knees and keep them in this postion at all times throughout the sequence dance.
- Balance, I need to work on my balance, as you can see from the picture above, there is alot of motifs that interpret just standing on one leg, therefore I need to make sure that both of my legs have the same level of balance to support me, due to the dance working on both the left and right.
